Rothay Manor is a small, friendly Country House hotel on the outskirts of Ambleside. The elegant Regency house was built in 1825 as a private residence, and is set in its own landscaped gardens with plenty of free on-site parking just a short walk from the centre of Ambleside and a quarter mile from the head of Windermere lake, ideally situated for walking, cycling, sight-seeing or just relaxing.
Owned and personally managed by the Nixon family for over 40 years, the comfortable drawing rooms and candlelit dining room still retain the relaxed atmosphere of a private house.
The restaurant has a reputation for excellent food stretching back to the early 1970's and has been listed consistently in the Good Food Guide for 40 years, while in 2008 it was the only hotel restaurant to be shortlisted for the Cumbria Tourism 'Taste' award.

Using local produce wherever possible, menus are prepared with flair and imagination to the highest of standards. Dining is an experience to be savoured to the full and the Dining Room is classic and elegant yet spacious and comfortable.

Rothay Manor's renowned buffet-style Afternoon Tea is very popular and served each day except Christmas Day, and booking is essential.
All 16 bedrooms and 3 suites are en-suite, and are individually designed to combine both traditional and modern furnishings. Most of the Superior rooms have balconies overlooking the garden, while the spacious suites - 2 of which are in the grounds, offer extra space and privacy.
Families are welcome here with a choice of family rooms and suites. Cots, high chairs, baby-listening and High Tea are all available too. Two bedrooms have been specially adapted for use by those with impaired mobility and have wheel-in showers (with shower chairs available).
From October to May each year, a choice of Special Interest holidays are on offer. Subjects include: Antiques, Bridge, Chess, Gardening, Interior Design and Historic Period Style, Lakeland Literary Heritage, Music, Painting, Scrabble and Walking.
Rothay Manor is open over the Festive Period with a 4-night House party over Christmas and a 3-night House party at New Year. Special rates are available for November and December.
All residents have free use of a nearby Leisure Centre, with swimming pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, and free fishing permits are also available
